Labeling – method for increasing the efficiency of web filtering
Web filtering itself isn’t a new invention. In fact, its idea is being known for quite a long time. Nevertheless, since the first tries of filtering usage occurred, there have been a lot of controversies around. Most people have been agreeing that using a web filter seems useful and – if well-configured – might bring quite efficient results, but there always has been a ‘but’. Since the first filters were being tried out, people argued about, so called, unwanted content. What criteria to choose to decide whether each page deserves blocking or not? How to agree political correctness and freedom of speech? As long as there are filters in common usage, no one has managed to find the answer to these questions. All the applied solutions might have been considered as solely partial. New ideas are still being in tests. One of them is labeling, probably the best one because of its non-automation. To make Url filtering more efficient, people thought that websites’ owners should personally decide whether they sites contain materials that shouldn’t be watched by, for example, children. With this method, all websites in the Internet would be provided with a little document, readable only by filters, so the categorization would be significantly facilitated and accelerated.
